Geneva — A major emergency exercise is to take place at the nuclear power plant in the Swiss district of Gösgen, close to the border with Germany, next week.
The Swiss Federal Office for Civil Protection announced on Thursday that the drill will take place on November 5.
The aim is to train for the emergency response in the event of an accident at the 45-year-old nuclear power plant. It will involve the army, emergency services and staff from the nuclear industry.
The drill will include practising the transport of generators and pumps from an emergency materials store to the nuclear facility, the office said. During a simulated breakdown of an army vehicle, helicopters will be used for onward transport, it added.
General emergency exercises (GNU) of this kind take place every two years. The nuclear power plant continues to operate during the exercise.
